Hi everyone,

Happy new year! And, a special welcome to those of you who are discovering the NY Composer Meetup for the first time. It is great to see so many new people getting involved and networking. I know there are many who are eager to play their own music. So, the first item of focus will be on you.

This Meetup will be in three parts:

First, we will play music of newcomers. The easiest way is to bring a CD of some of your tracks which can be played through our laptop into the monitors. Try to keep you selection/s down to about 5 minutes or so.
If you wish to perform live, that is fine too. The sound system is my small m-audio monitors (very modest!) with RCA, stereo 1/8th inch mini, or 1/4 inch inputs. So, calculate your amplification needs accordingly. If you have any questions, performance-based, tech, or otherwise, please feel free to drop me an e-mail.

Second, a number of you want to write and perform new pieces for a NY Composer Meetup mini-concert. We will discuss the concert, figure out a date, time, and place, and set up a program. The idea is to put together a forum and an incentive to create new works. Very cool!

Finally (time allowing), we will do a follow-up Q&A on the Computers & Music workshop we did last month. Dan and Keith did a great job with their demos, and we have had a lot of good feedback from that meetup. So, feel free to ask questions, and if you missed that session you will have another chance to get updated.

As usual, during the meetup feel free to have wine and munchies. If you want beer, it is BYO. (I can only carry so much stuff! ; )

Location:
The Tada Theater is in Chelsea at 15 West 28th Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue--very easy to get to. You westsiders can take the 1 train to 28th Street and walk a few blocks east. And, the R and W local trains stop just a few hundred feet from the building entrance. Tada is on the uptown side of 28th Street. The building entrance is next to a parking lot in the middle of the block. (I'm not sure what the parking situation is in the evening, but allow extra time if you're driving.)
Looking forward to seeing everyone again.

All best,
Preston

Miracle of all miracles! I signed up for personal training at the Apple Mac store so I can learn how to use those cool things in my computer. It would be great to focus the next meeting on gadgets to make inexpensive high-quality recording possible.

Who attended?

    •  They get better and better, Preston. Listening to all the different influences, hearing about different ways of composing, ways of recording, it feels like we're moving forward, especially when discussing collaborating and performing a mini-concert. I'd love to hear every piece again. Seems like there's never enough time to cover all the subjects that come up. I'm sorry we didn't get to hear everyone who brought music. I suspect we will, though. For a seat-of-the-pants organizer, Preston, you're not too shabby.
    •  provided info on what other people are doing
    •  preston was a great chairperson. members were very proactive and kind
    •  Lots of variety of songs, compositions and performers
    •  a unique and eclectic group that is enthusiastic, talented and genuine. Highly recommended for anyone breaking into computer music production or a means to network/collaborate.

Personally,I would have preferred that the last 3 newbies had time to present our songs. However, I had a good time. Preston was a strong group leader and several of the compositions were awesome!
