What an amazing group of people! I was almost intimidated by the virtual cornucopia of talents, encompassing a multitude of captivating genres. A very amiable, supportive, helpful ambiance, not to mention that Preston is a fantastic organizer. All in all, I learned so much and was elated to be in the company of such gifted musicians!

To experience music through other peoples eyes and souls. From what I hear the types of music brought into this group vary. Great for getting those juices flowing.

I am psyched by the enthusiasm and dedication everyone has to their unique sense of creativity, and how infectious that is. It's great! People are really getting a chance to get their music heard and to get constructive feedback from like-minded passionate music people, and learn ways to make their music better. Really cool!

Chances are high that you'll meet someone or hear something of interest. And they laugh, too.

I personally would like to see as many people join this valuable resource who are compatible and socially developed. Due to the subjects and topics that can be discussed about music and music production, I feel that a specific number of people should meet at one specific time . . . (particularly if there is 'audience participation / demonstrations involved) . This of course should be worked out carefully, so every one gets a fair share of time and attention by the leader(s).

  • The New York Composers Meetup Group

Many composers spend a lot of time working alone. I think it's very healthy to get out and network and meet other composers and see and hear what they are doing. Who knows? It might also help with some connections.

If you are a musician, vocalist or songwriter interested in being with a broad range of people who are considerate, thoughtful, intelligent, gifted, talented, real and fun then you need to join this Meetup Group. If you can be brave enough to share your soul and be honest with yourself, they will be honest with you. And you will walk away lifted!

  • The New York Composers Meetup Group

This meetup has a wide variety of people - classical composers, songwriters... experienced and professional to hobbyists. The organizer, Preston, is really receptive, gets good events together, and seems to be a very nice guy. It's a great place to ask questions without feeling stupid and to get some musical ideas.

IT'S A JOY TO MEET OTHER SONGWRITERS AND COMPOSERS AND SHARE YOUR WORK WITH PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND THE ANGST AND EFFORT THAT GOES INTO IT. THIS GROUP REALLY IS AS ADVERTISED AND VERY HELPFUL TO THE NEW YORK MUSICAL COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. THANKYOU PRESTON FOR YOUR GENEROUS GIFT OF TIME AND EFFORT.

This is already fulfilling its potential with great community outreach. Thanks to Preston for putting the time into it. I hope it remains on Fridays, or it might be difficult for me to attend regularly with my schedule. It is also fun to take a small group out afterward for libations, etc. :)

Anyone who is interested in meeting other composers/songwriters and sharing ideas about creativity, musicmaking, business issues, technicalities of home studio life, connecting with others for possible collaboration would benefit from being part of this group, as well as the joy of hearing other peoples' music and the stimulus that comes from that and the energy of a supportive atmosphere to cheer you on in your own work. Bravo!

Glad I joined. Suggestions about my continuing to compose are stimulating me to think of ideas for piano pieces for my piano students to hear or even some easy enough for them to play. Mostly, this meetup is fun for me and the other members, too.

  •  concept is great, but realistically, too many agendas to tackle. But it's helpful that preston takes the lead to connect various individuals to help each other out. Some kind of practical methodology would be helpful - a common bulletin board over the internet that posts discussion of topics that are relevant to entire group - although this may require more of preston's precious time to keep the discussions in focus; this is outside of individual conversations/emails that may take place privately.

    emiko on Feb 2, 2008.

  •  Maybe the time should be divided; first a general topic discussion (including musical stuff, industry etc), where people can also eat/drink if that works w the venue, followed by some practical workshopping for those interested?
